Prepare for your test by following these instructions:
- Take your sample between 6am and 10am.
- If you have an unusual sleep pattern, your cortisol results may be unreliable. If you must test, do so within 2 hours of waking and let us know in your supporting information.
- Take this test when any symptoms of a short-term illness have settled.
- Take this test two to five days after the start of your period, ideally on day three. It can be taken at any time if you do not have periods.
- Avoid fatty foods for eight hours before your test. You do not need to fast.
- Corticosteroid medication can affect this test. Ask your doctor whether you should stop taking it before testing.
- Take your sample at least 24 hours after taking any vitamin or mineral supplements.
- Do not take biotin supplements for two days before this test. If biotin has been prescribed, discuss this with your doctor before stopping it.
- Hormonal contraception can affect the results of this test. Taking a break from hormonal contraception and waiting for your periods to restart before your blood test may provide more accurate results.
- If you take thyroxine, you can take your medication as usual, either before or after your blood test.
- If you take desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) or liothyronine, take your medication after you have collected your sample.
- Please let us know in your supporting information if you take amiodarone or lithium, as these can affect your thyroid function results.

We will check that you feel well before you leave. If you are nervous about blood tests, have difficult veins or have fainted before, please tell us so we can support you during your appointment.

Preparation depends on the test you have chosen.
Some tests need no special preparation. Others may need fasting, a certain time of day, or changes to supplements before your appointment.
Any specific instructions will be shown with your test and sent to you when you book.
It can also help to stay well hydrated before your blood draw unless your test instructions tell you otherwise.
After your blood draw, keep the plaster or dressing in place for around 30–60 minutes.
A small amount of tenderness or bruising can sometimes happen afterwards and usually settles within a few days.
Try to avoid heavy lifting with that arm for at least a few hours after your blood draw. If you notice a small bruise, a cold compress may help.

Yes. This appointment is suitable if you already have a blood test kit or blood request form and simply need a qualified phlebotomist to collect your blood sample.
Yes, please send us a screenshot of your blood form or the instructions included with your test kit before your appointment. This allows us to check the samples, tubes and any additional requirements in advance.
Please bring your blood request form or complete blood test kit with you. If you have already sent us the information beforehand, bringing the original documents or kit instructions is still recommended.
Yes, we can provide centrifuging for suitable tests, but this is an additional service and must be booked where required. Please send us your blood form or test kit instructions in advance so we can confirm exactly what your test requires.
